Challenge

Factory girls are a marginalized group in the Egyptian society. 88% of factory girls belong to poor, illiterate families. The main motive for joining the labor force as early as 12 years old is the dire need to obtain an income regardless of how small it is. Girls are exposed to exploitation, violence & discrimination at the work place. Most do not report sexual abuse at work because there are consequences: she will be iced out of her industry, shamed in public & punished in private.

Solution

This project is focused on making the work place safe for women workers, through raising awareness of 600 women, girls & factory workers exposing the problem to encourage the public opinion to take a stand & stop blaming the victim amplifying voices of women & provide support & group therapy for sexually abused factory girls and women. Six sessions per factory, once a week will be held followed by group therapy. Engaging men working in factories as they are a pivotal part of the solution

Long-Term Impact

The direct beneficiary is 600 women, girls and factory workers in 10 factories. This will create a buzz and a movement to be implemented nationwide. Beneficiaries also include the families of the 600 women. Change the Egyptian culture, the culture and strategy of reporting as each factory will receive a certificate of a safe factory for girls once they have all the criteria for the certificate in place plus Increase number of reported cases by 25% within 1 year of beginning the project
