At Jesús Nazareno School in Arequipa, an innovative project, Writing, Understanding, and Acting: The Texts on Stage Project, is transforming the way students express themselves and engage with their education.
When Wennie, a passionate Enseña Perú Professional, began her teaching journey at this school, she quickly noticed a challenge: many of her students struggled with communication. Speaking in front of others made them anxious, and presenting their work became a daunting task. Determined to make a difference, Wennie envisioned a project that would not only build their communication skills but also uncover and nurture their hidden talents.
Observing that her students enjoyed role-playing and acting, Wennie designed a unique approach. She introduced theatre as a platform where students across all grade levels—preschool, primary, and secondary—could write and perform their own original scripts. Through this creative process, students not only improved their written and oral communication skills but also found joy in storytelling and performing.
The results have been remarkable. Students now present themselves with confidence, and the project has brought the entire school community together. Teachers, the principal, and parents have all joined forces to make this initiative a success. Parents contributed by crafting costumes from recycled materials and helping secure a theatre for performances, turning the project into a collaborative effort.
As Wennie reflects, “Today, the students are motivated and enjoy acting very much. Many have expressed an interest in participating in future theatre performances. The project has proved to be a powerful tool for developing creativity, communication, and confidence in our students.”
The school is now working to incorporate theatre into its academic curriculum, aiming to make it a lasting tradition. What began as an idea to address communication challenges has grown into a celebration of creativity and collective effort.
At Enseña Perú, we believe in the power of transformative education. Projects like this one remind us that with innovation, dedication, and the support of a community, it is possible to empower students to find their voices and thrive.
Thank you for being part of this journey and supporting educators like Wennie as they create lasting impact in their classrooms and beyond.
