A Library for All

By Melissa Ninamango | Project Leader

As we continue sharing stories that reflect the power of education in our communities, we want to highlight how a group of students in Ica transformed their school with a simple but powerful idea: building their own library.

At public school 22542 in Acomayo, Ica, the project “Ecobiblioteca en Acción” began in a sixth-grade classroom alongside teacher Yurubic, an alumnus of the Enseña Perú Leadership Program. Before starting, the students worked together to reflect on their school environment—identifying the spaces they liked, those that needed improvement, and the changes they wished to see.

That reflection sparked a question: why not create a library?

Although they had no furniture, books, or budget, the students decided to reclaim an unused space and transform it into a reading area for the entire school community. They designed how the library should look, wrote letters requesting book donations, and surveyed classmates to learn what kinds of stories they wanted to read.

Slowly, the project began to grow. Families donated books, teachers joined the effort, and the school community organized activities to raise resources.

The initiative also embraced environmental care. During recess, students collected plastic bottles and wrappers that were cleaned and turned into eco-bricks, later used to build reading benches for the new library.

After months of collective work, the school officially inaugurated the first Eco-Library in the Acomayo community, with more than 350 books and a space open to students from nearby schools as well.

What started as an idea in a sixth-grade classroom became a community project that shows how powerful student leadership can be.

Thanks to your continued support, more students can develop leadership, creativity, and a love for reading. Your donations help make initiatives like this possible.
