THANK YOUfor your generous donations! The children of Julcan sponsored by you have had a life changing half a year. We are so glad to share with you the story of one of our students.
His name is Abner. He’s a 12 year-old student from 5th Grade, who also works on weekends as a sales assistant. He has 5 brothers and sisters, his mother didn’t finish primary school due to lack of opportunities in his childhood and his father has a reputation of drinking too much and even being abusive with the mother, actually he has already been in prison once before. Both parents work in agriculture and all these events have an impact on personal, social and academic development of Abner.
At the beginning, when the teacher Milagros met him, he was always late, spoke a lot of bad words, never did his homework, raise his voice a lot, did a lot of noise in the classroom, skipped class every time he had a chance and came very dirty to school. Due to all of this, none of his schoolmates wanted to form group with him. Also, everyone had warned me about the possibility that he might stole classroom materials, he had the worst reputation… and he was only 12. He was still a kid.
However, no one knew what to do with him anymore. Even the parents told the teachers to “spank him, we give you permission. We no longer know what to do with this kid". In this situation, there were only two ways: leave Abner as a "hopeless case" or try new ways to get close to him and make him understand about the importance of taking the lead of his own life. The process of change required and still requires patience, confidence and more changes of strategies to reach favorable behaviors.
The breaking point happened one day, when the teacher sat with him in the dining room. Abner had made a rude and insulting gesture with his hand.Milagros tried to talk to him:"You are a very good and very skillful kid. You have a lot of energy and you could get so far if you wanted. I do not like to be giving you a last call all the time. I’m not comfortable being aware that others do or that they hit you. Please, tell me how would you like to be treated in order for you to make things better?". Abner replied, "I just want you to always talk to me with nice words, like you do to others, even when I behave badly. A smile could wake me up”.
Since that day, Abner has changed a lot, his behavour has improved immensely and, as a consecuence, his academic development has also get much better.
This is just one of the stories of Julcan, where most of the kids have also improve in their self-confidence and other social abilities to succeeded in life. We have 4 numbers to qualified them: 0 Pre Rookie, 1 Rookie, 2 Intermediate, 3 Advanced and 4 Outstanding. Check the chart which is attached to see how they’ve improved during 2014.
All of this, prepared the students with the right social abilities to improve their academic results:
What do you think? Can we make all little children accomplish as much as Abner did? We believe it’s possible. And that’s why we keep on working everyday at Julcan. We are sure that education is not only improving academically, but also being able to choose the right path for their own lifes.
Thank you very much for providing us the chance to transform the life of this children through education!
