Help Revolutionize Education For Peruvian Children

Due to your generous contributions Enseña Perú has been able to keep growing and reach more students that are benefiting from a quality education, which signifies a life changing opportunity. Enseña Peru is now working in 57 schools along 14 different regions of the country. In this way, we are being able to make a great impact on the life of more Peruvian children by enhancing their learning and strengthening their academic growth.

Our mission involves pursuing a positive increase not only in the purely academic abilities of our students, but also in their soft skills which includes aspects such as self-confidence and teamwork, as well as applying their critical skills to their own realities. A great example of this is brought to us by the powerful story of Diana Cabrera, one of our fellow teachers who is currently working in the coastal region of Piura, specifically in the town of Chulucanas.  

Diana set an improvement goal for her Math class since the beginning of the school year. Working passionately toward that goal has already fueled the kids noticeable improvement in only two terms. As we can see in the charts, the number of students that were failing the class [showed in red] has decreased by 6% and a big portion of the students that were barely passing the course have moved to level 2, summing to an improvement rate of 28%.Such academic improvement is celebrated and it feels as rewarding as witnessing your students connecting lessons and class discussions to their lives. Diana Contreras tells us about the importance of talking about gender issues and equality with her students, which is a topic that is currently being discussed at all levels throughout the whole country.

 “This is why I decided to work with the issue of gender, so that they could understand that boys can also do all the things that girls do and vice versa, and that such differentiation shouldn’t exist as something mandatory. Thus, in ´Personhood and Society´ class the kids learned about the Children Rights and how they apply to all of them. In this way they discovered that rights are universal and equal to all regardless of gender. Therefore, if a right applies to both boys and girls without distinction, there shouldn’t be mandatory differences in other realms of life either. From that and following the proposals and ideas that came from the kids themselves, we began to form the idea of Gender Equality.”

Diana Cabrera explains that in order to keep understanding the idea of Gender Equality, the kids began to talk about the various gender roles they observed in their own society. During these conversations the kids were able to notice the various social differences around them, as well as to question them and formulate their own analysis.

“And it was after understanding and knowing about their own rights that the desire to spread awareness about this issue [gender issues and equality] came from themselves. The kids decided to create a campaign around this topic by creating their own banners saying that there shouldn't be such differentiation between men and women because gender equality do exist.”                  

This story is testimony of the well-rounded education that Enseña Peru is aiming to spread; one that benefits both the teacher and  the students, as well as one that encourages perseverance, autonomy, self-worth and confidence, teamwork and, most importantly, commitment with our communities.
