Farmers Progress

By Karen Ashmore | Project Leader

Lambi Fund supported the requests of seven organizations in the Southern Department that wanted to strengthen their food production capacity. It is a small emergency project to help these organizations deal with the serious food insecurity problem that exists particularly in the South.

This program targeted a total of 188 direct beneficiaries for a total amount estimated at 4,484,000.00 gourds. In this amount there was a small fee for the launch and follow-up of the program. Each beneficiary received between 20 and 25,000 gourds, and would have to repay the organization ¾ of the money he received after the first food production cycle so that the program could continue to roll in the organizations.

The members planted various types of crops (black beans, corn, millet, peanuts, cassava, pepper). In the majority of the fields the farmers planted 3 or 4 crops together (they say if they are not good at one, they will be good at the other).

The climatic conditions did not allow the fields to succeed as the planters had hoped. It was raining normally during the time they were planting and then it was a complete and endless drought, attributed to climate change. The success rate of the fields varies from 45 to 90% according to the area and depending on which crops planted.
