Expanding education in Cambodia

by GVI Charitable Programs
Expanding education in Cambodia

Summary

This project will develop a mobile library and provide educational resources for young children, students, parents and teachers. Educational resources and schooling were harshly affected following the civil war and, more recently, the pandemic. This project strives to bridge those gaps with resources and education programs. Developing English skills is a key focus. Siem Reap is a popular tourist destination, and English skills open the doors to further education and employment opportunities.

Challenge

Despite willing and eager teachers, Siem Reap's teaching standard is inconsistent. Challenges include a lack of an established curriculum, limited training and resources, and long work hours. Children often only attend half days. Few schools have libraries. English is taught in schools, but there are limited chances for children to expand their vocabulary through reading. Developing English skills is a valuable asset in this region that relies heavily on tourism.

Solution

This project will work to support teachers' professional development and also develop resource banks to support quality teaching and learning. A mobile library will be established to provide valuable resources for teachers and to foster a love of books and reading in children. Books will help build reading and general literacy skills and allow children to learn to read for enjoyment. This will be a free resource and address the issues of resource scarcity and affordability.

Long-Term Impact

This project will lead to quality education therefore and improve opportunities for the local communities. An improvement in educational standards, particularly English literacy, means educational and economic opportunities for communities can improve. As the current population of Cambodia is so young, we aim to kick start an ever-continuing cycle of educational attainment. We also strive to increase the profile of teachers so that students can see it as valuable work option.
