Summary

At the Foundation for African Medicine and Education (FAME), we believe that everyone should have access to compassionate, high-quality health care. With 27,000 patient visits annually, FAME seeks to raise funds this Giving Tuesday to boost our sustainability and life-saving work across departments: Outpatient Clinic, Inpatient Clinic, Laboratory, Radiology, Labor & Delivery, and Maternal & Child Health Services. Please join us on Giving Tuesday to support healthcare in rural Tanzania.

Challenge

Far too many rural Tanzanians still find themselves in clinics and hospitals that are inadequately staffed and equipped. Tanzania has one of the world's lowest clinician-to-population ratios: three physicians for every 100,000 people and 24 nurse/midwives for every 100,000 people (WHO 2012). Today, only 20% of doctors practice in rural areas where they are most needed. As a result of these variables, ordinary people are dying from and/or becoming permanently debilitated by very treatable disease

Solution

FAME advances patient-centered care for some of the most under-resourced communities in northern Tanzania. Our vision: Healthier rural communities have access to quality medical care and frontline health care workers have the resources they need to treat disease and save lives. With 157 Tanzanian staff members and a strategic continuing education and training program, FAME is helping to build Tanzania's rural health care workforce. FAME is a top destination in our area for comprehensive care.

Long-Term Impact

With a culture of life-long learning, we continually strive to better understand the needs and challenges of our community and to serve as a center of excellence in our region. FAME now serves a catchment area of 1.2 million rural Tanzanians through various departments. Our Giving Tuesday campaign will help us strengthen our capacity to serve diverse rural communities that would otherwise have extremely limited access to equitable, quality health care.
