Summary

Does every child deserve a protected life within a family? Yes. Sadly, that is not the reality for 8 Million children across the globe. They live separated from their families due to poverty, discrimination etc. In Ghana, poverty is a main driver of institutional care. 4,500 children live in unlicensed institutions. We work to keep children in their families through sensitizations led by reunited families as well as support quality reintegration into families. Donate now and Join us today.

Challenge

Globally, 8 Million children live in institutions. 80% of these are not orphans but have been separated from their families due to a range of issues. According to the Department of Social Welfare, there are some 139 orphanages in Ghana. Orphanages harm children, exposing them to all forms of violence, abuse and exploitation. Children are deprived of care, love and attention in mass institutions, making it difficult for them to cope in life.

Solution

Our project aims to reach over 30,000 people in the northern regions of Ghana through community sensitizations on family-based care and radio discussions on the dangers of institutional care. This will be done by care leavers, caregivers and social workers. The project will also essentially support family strengthening programs through the provision of reintegration packages, skills training and startup capital, dignity kits, nutritious meals to families and training to our ambassadors.

Long-Term Impact

With your powerful support, the project will go a long way to reduce the number of residential homes for children in Ghana, ensure family strengthening and stem the flow of children into residential homes. Communities will understand the importance of family-based care and children's wellbeing will be improved. (All the donations given on Global Giving are tax-deductible in Austria.)
