Bad family interaction produces abandonment, physical violence, abuse against women and children. In 77% cases of domestic violence in Colombia in 2013, women were the victims. This project will provide trainings to improve family dialogue and facilitate healthier interactions for 100 vulnerable families in Santa Marta. It will also include training of government officials and local NGOs to help design new policies, which will benefit children and women, and create a Family Club in the region.
National Institute of Legal Medicine and Science Forensic reported that in 2013 68,230 cases of domestic violence were registered in Colombia. 77.58% (52,933) of the victims were women. Intolerance, alcohol and psychoactive substances were main reasons for violence within families, Santa Marta is one of the cities on the Colombia Caribbean coast, which is mostly affected by the social phenomenon of domestic violence. It is in high demand of stronger policies and family protection programs.
Within a year we plan to create a new strategy to work with families in Santa Marta, Colombia. We will provide training to 100 families with intervention support and monitoring and 50 public officials. We expect these families to learn how to solve internal conflicts and create peaceful dialogues. We will also create a Family Club that will provide further support to the community.
With this project we'll break old patterns of neglect and abandonment, strengthen families and community by engaging them into positive social change. By the end of the project, we will create a program model that could be replicated and affect a greater number of families.
