Supplementary Report - Pilot Kickoff & Pictorial of Training

By Victoria Kamau | General Manager

INTRODUCTION

Herewith is a supplimentary report providing additional information on the pilot of the Family Empowerment programme which was kicked off in May 2019 in partership with Wessex Social Ventures (WSV)

OBJECTIVES

As previously highlighted, our objectives for the Family Empowerment programme are to: -

  1. Implement microenterprises that will produce a sustainable level of revenue generation for families that are planning to take-in orphaned and vulnerable children from OCV. Also provide a vital supply of products and services to help keep students in school and communities healthy. (SDG 8)
  2. Through financially empowering the families, ensuring that children remain in school, receive good nutrition, have access to healthcare and quality shelter post-reintegration from Olturoto Children’s Village.(SDG 3 & 4)
  3. Through economic empowerment, ensure that children remain in a safe, stable and sustainable home environment (SDG 3 & 4)

The micro-enterprises will be run by 2-3 people, made up of guardians and others from their communities. These enterprises supply solutions for the poorest that could normally only be provided through aid. This programme will significantly increase reintegration success as economic security for guardians has always been a challenge for OCV. Through the pilot, Kickstart will be creating permanent businesses, which in the first year alone have the potential to;

  • Provide over 600 women and girls with sanitary towels through Petals
  • Provide 500 people with access to solar lighting and 300 people with cheap phone charging through Right Light
  • Produce ~15 tons of fertilizer by building 3 multi-cubicle toilet blocks (10 cubicles and urinals) through Roots

PILOT KICK-OFF

WSV have conducted a training of trainers for local Kickstart Kids International staff at the initial stage. This has built local capacity and allows local staff to implement the programme with the guidance of WSV. Translation of materials will also be done to ensure delivery through easily understandable media for the guardians.

SELECTION OF GUARDIANS

The guardians to experience the pilot phase shall be selected based on the following criteria

  1. Most deserving cases based on need/financial vulnerability
  2. Where children have been reintegrated or are close to reintegration
  3. Where micro-enterprises will be most successful based on feasibility studies

Selection and training of guardians is expected to be completed by end of June 2019.

Herewith are pictures from the recently concluded training on establishment of the Microenterprises.
