Summary

Sitting in class when you are hungry is not easy; eventually the student will prefer to stay home and sleep to escape the pains of hunger. Abraham's Oasis has already provided one month of complimentary feeding for school students in order to encourage them to 'stay in school' during this time of famine. We plan with your help to continue this until the rainy season and harvest time or another five months when school ends.

Challenge

Famine is so devastating, the rains did not come, the harvest failed, the seed crop has been eaten. School children are coming to school without breakfast, no injera / bread or tea and sugar. 1700 students in a remote rural community called Fyel Wuha, have been assigned to Abraham's Oasis to 'keep them in school' by direct nutritional support. Through provision of complimentary nutrition the 1700 children will be able to continue their education despite the plight of famine.

Solution

Last week Abraham's Oasis was able to provide 1700 hungry children with high energy biscuits and peanut butter and distributed through the Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) in Fyel Wuha. The community was delighted as this is easy to distribute by the PTA and the food is rapidly absorbed by the students enabling them to concentrate and continue their schooling undeterred by the famine around them.

Long-Term Impact

We will maintain the educational status of 1700 elementary and high school students in Fyel Wuha, a remote vulnerable community formed of subsistence farmers who long to see their children better educated. Provision of complimentary feeding means no interruption of education for 1700 students and their families who thereby become indirect beneficiaries (8500).
