In addition to the regular challenges that the residents of Makindu face, Covid-19 has intensified the struggles in the community, especially with the amount of food available and health safety in schools. Right now the residents of Makindu are facing major challenges. The Makindu community has been educated on how to stay safe from Covid-19 and the schools are back open. However, due to the schools needing to take precautions, people unable to work and the community struggling financially, the school was unable to get any funding for soap, water, food or any intervention. While we are trying to get funding for necessities the school needs to be a Covid-safe space, we are also hoping to keep everyone in good shape and well nourished by providing goats to each family. One goat is $65. Providing each family with a goat will guarantee that the residents will be in good health to continue their education and continue going to school. We are so happy and fortunate to have been able to help slow the spread of Covid-19 for this long. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Child in front of a house
All around the world children are not returning to school. That has also been the case for the kids of Makindu and other parts of rural Kenya. The Makindu Children's Centre and school have always been stable and supportive places for them, but now, the kids are always in their crowded homes. The centre has consistently been able to provide food and serve large groups, but now we must deliver food to households to abide by social distancing laws. Delivering food to individual houses costs much more than it did to make one meal a day at the centre for everyone. We are using as many resources as we can to do this as cost effectively as possible but are in need of as many donations as we can get to continue to provide the service of delivering food to individual homes. Please keep in mind, many of these homes are huts without rooms and may house 10 or more people. They’re extremely small and not meant to house that many people for a long period of time. Many of the members in the households have compromised immune systems and in order to keep everyone in the household healthy, they need nutritious meals. We greatly appreciate any donations to help us continue to deliver goods like maize, beans, milk and rice to keep the community healthy. Thank you for your continued support.

Masked Child at Makindu Children's Centre
Corona Virus is skyrocketing in Kenya. There have been 13,353 confirmed cases and over 200 deaths. Although Kenya has some testing, there isn’t enough and it’s only in Nairobi, which is hard to get to from Makindu, and would require being in a car with other people. The corona virus has impacted the Makindu Children’s Centre drastically. Luckily, we have been able to send over some masks. The centre is closed. This means that the kids and families are unable to visit the centre as social distancing is crucial to prevent the spread of this virus, especially since so many of the people we care for are immune compromised from HIV/AIDS. To keep the kids and families healthy, we need twice the amount of food than before. Now that we are delivering the food to people’s houses, we are forced to spend more money on food and resources to get the food to them. We need as much assistance as possible at this time because we aren’t sure how long the social distancing will last and the virus will be around. Until then, please keep the Makindu Children’s Center in mind as they are in an unforgiving climate that makes growing food and keeping livestock difficult. Thank you for your support. Asante for giving HOPE to the kids.
