Childhood malnutrition remains a critical issue in Nigeria, affecting millions of children’s health, education, and future potential. The Catch Them Young: Nourish Nigeria’s Future Leaders project is tackling this crisis by providing nutritious meals, nutrition education, and sustainable food solutions to underserved children.
This quarter, despite rising food prices and increasing insecurity, we have successfully:
Provided more than 300 nutritious meals to children in need.
onducted nutrition education sessions for parents, caregivers, and teachers.
Partnered with 15 local farmers to ensure a sustainable and cost-effective food supply.
Empowered 5 families to start community gardens, reducing reliance on expensive food markets.
We are immensely grateful to our generous donors, whose unwavering support has been instrumental in making this possible. This quarter, we received $200 in donations, and in-kind donations which directly contributed to feeding and empowering vulnerable children. Your magnanimous support is a beacon of hope for these young lives.
Furthermore, every contribution made towards this project is re-invested into society through the social impact initiatives of the Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF), a sector-agnostic hybrid organization dedicated to sustainable social impact. Through our initiatives, we ensure that all proceeds are channeled back into communities, creating a cycle of transformation and empowerment.
To continue feeding children and expanding our impact, we need your support. We invite you to join our GlobalGiving Little by Little Fundraising Campaign from March 25-28 and help us provide more nutritious meals to vulnerable children.
2. Key Achievements
A. Providing Nutritious Meals
Goal: Deliver balanced, nutrient-rich meals to children in underserved communities.
A good number of children received daily, well-balanced meals.
Partnered with local food suppliers and farmers to secure fresh, organic ingredients.
Introduced fortified foods to address common vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
B. Nutrition Education for Sustainable Change
Goal: Equip children, parents, and educators with essential knowledge on healthy eating habits.
Conducted workshops covering proper meal planning, food safety, and affordable nutrition.
Distributed educational booklets to empower families with sustainable meal strategies.
Trained 5 teachers and caregivers to integrate nutrition lessons into everyday learning.
C. Strengthening Food Security Through Community Involvement
Goal: Promote self-sufficiency and sustainable food production.
Established community food gardens to reduce dependency on expensive food markets.
Partnered with 15 local farmers to ensure a steady supply of fresh produce at reduced costs.
Trained 25 families in home gardening, ensuring long-term access to nutritious food.
3. Challenges and Lessons Learned
A. High Cost of Food Items
Challenge: The ongoing food inflation crisis has made it increasingly difficult to afford staple foods like rice, beans, and vegetables.
Solution: We have diversified food sources, engaged in bulk purchasing, and partnered with local farmers to reduce costs.
B. Insecurity in Food Supply Chains
Challenge: Armed conflicts, banditry, and roadblocks have disrupted food transportation, leading to delays and higher costs.
Solution: We are working with community-based suppliers to reduce dependency on high-risk distribution channels.
C. Increased Demand for Support
Challenge: More families are facing food insecurity, leading to a sharp rise in children needing assistance.
Solution: We are scaling up fundraising efforts to expand our meal programs and ensure we can reach more children.
4. Impact and Success Stories
Case Study: Amina’s Journey to Good Health
Amina, a 7-year-old girl from an underserved community, struggled with malnutrition, constant fatigue, and poor school performance. Her single mother couldn’t afford three square meals a day due to high food prices.
Through our meal program and nutrition education initiative, Amina now eats healthy, has gained weight, and actively participates in school. Her mother, empowered with nutrition knowledge, now grows vegetables at home to supplement their diet.
5. Next Steps and Future Goals
Increase meal distribution to serve 1500 more children affected by food insecurity.
Expand community food gardens to create long-term food solutions.
Secure additional funding to combat rising food costs and sustain program impact.
Strengthen partnerships with local food cooperatives and government agencies for better resource mobilization.
