By Joel Stanier | Project Development Manager
Dear friends and supporters,
Thank you for your support to provide emergency food aid, soaps and medication in Sri Lanka, which is providing a lifeline to families suffering immense hardship without work or income due to the strict Covid 19 pandemic lockdowns.
The Sri Lankan government recently declared a state of economic emergency, as a steep fall in the value of the Sri Lankan rupee caused a spike in food prices; the cost of rice, sugar, milk powder and gas has doubled over recent weeks, resulting in serious food and gas shortages, which has caused delays in our distribution and has been frustrating for our local TFT team.
To avoid unsafe crowds and abate the risk of the spread of the virus, Mr Percy, our Country Director has identified desperate families through local village leaders, and is personally delivering to those in most urgent need, which includes mums to be, and new mothers who need to keep healthy to be able to breastfeed their newborn babies,
Dhashani (26), who lives in a tsunami house with her father, gave birth two days ago to an unnamed baby girl. She was very happy to receive supplies of soap, rice, dhal, vegetables, eggs, sugar, and flour, which will keep her family fed for the next few weeks, and will also provide the nutrition she needs to enable her to breastfeed her baby.
Thanks to you, we are also providing 100 women and girls with washable sanitary aids to help prevent infection, which are made and purchased from single mother entrepreneurs at the Women's Development Centre in Kandy, to provide much-needed income for them, and enables them to feed their own families.
We couldn't do this without your continued support.
Thank you again for each of your donations and continued support.
Yours sincerely,
Joel
