Enhancing Nutrition and Livelihoods

By Joel Stanier | General Manager

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Our recent Nutrition Awareness Program at a Junior School in Galle, aimed to improve the nutritional status of children in vulnerable areas by educating their parents. The program involved the active participation of 90 parents, 21 students, and 8 teachers, with resource persons delivering two informative sessions.

The sessions covered various topics, including awareness of child malnutrition, the importance of a healthy diet and habits, understanding the Front of Package Labeling system, and engaging in exercise activities. The program positively impacted the participants, who gained valuable knowledge and insights.

They also became aware of standard practices that compromise the nutritional quality of food, such as overcooking, excessive sugar or salt intake, and storing fruits and vegetables for prolonged periods. Participants were motivated to make positive changes in their habits and acquired knowledge on reading food package information to make informed choices.

Furthermore, the program increased awareness of identifying symptoms related to conditions like anaemia, hyperglycemia, and low body mass index (BMI) in children. Participants also gained insights into the harmful substances present in certain packaged products. Overall, the program equipped participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to prioritise nutrition, make healthier choices, and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

In May we conducted a five-day Bag Making Livelihood Training program, which aimed to empower women participants with comprehensive knowledge and skills in bag-making to improve their ability to generate higher income. Eleven women actively participated in this program, receiving valuable training from basic techniques to advanced bag-making processes, including machine setup and sewing.

Many mothers expressed their gratitude, stating that the training program provided them with essential insights into sewing techniques for bags that they were previously unaware of. They acknowledged the comprehensive nature of the program, which covered the entire process from machine setup to completing the bag. One mother emphasised the program's value for beginners and expressed confidence in her ability to produce higher-quality bags in the future. She attributed this newfound knowledge to the training program, recognising its potential to significantly contribute to the development of her business.

Thank you to everyone who helps us support these families, without your donations we could not make such a huge difference to the lives of so many.

Warmest regards,

Joel
