Unifying efforts: the work of BAB to meet the SDGs

By Lina Barrantes | Fundraising Coordinator

During the pandemic, we came to believe that our society would become more humane and caring, but the truth is that we learned little or nothing from these cruel years. The world has had a hard time recovering, especially with the current situation caused by armed conflicts, climate change, and the variation in food prices. According to the World Food Program, Colombia has the third highest inflation in Latin America, and 30% of its population is food insecure.

Every nation and every individual faces different problems. Still, it is also true that only by working together can we meet the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations General Assembly. The current outlook is not at all encouraging; the persistent inequality in rural areas, the lack of nutritious food on the table of the most vulnerable families, and the general environmental degradation of ecosystems make us see the possibility of building a more just, sustainable, and equitable world, and country, the fundamental building blocks of sustainability, more and more distant.

The Bogotá Food Bank adopts different initiatives to meet these goals, from the articulation of private enterprise, academia, the agricultural sector, and the community in general. Some of how the Bank integrates with the Sustainable Development Goals are:

Ending poverty: Food insecurity is one of the main causes of poverty in the world. Through our nutrition and training programs, we improve the beneficiaries’ quality of life and their environment.

Zero Hunger: We guarantee access to and availability of healthy and wholesome food for our partner organizations and their beneficiaries. We work for sustainable agriculture, supporting farmers.

Decent Work and Economic Growth: We offer training and skills development programs for our employees, affiliated organizations, and their beneficiaries, improving their employability opportunities.

Sustainable cities and communities: We strengthen organizations to become sustainable. With the support of universities and private enterprise, we generate synergies to address poverty and inequality in communities jointly.

Responsible production and consumption: We join forces with producers, traders and distributors to donate their surpluses. We reduce waste, thus generating an awareness of sustainability and solidarity with those most in need.

Climate action: Through partnerships with the rural population, we promote education and sustainable agricultural practices, contributing to the reduction of the carbon footprint resulting from food production and waste.

Alliances to achieve our objectives: We develop programs that encourage the donation of food, goods and services, the reduction of waste and care for the environment. We promote, as a main axis, the food security of the organizations we serve and their beneficiaries.

The most powerful human value we have is solidarity. In different episodes of life, we have shown that collective effort allows us to overcome any adversity, but as a society we seem to forget it at times. On this occasion, as Bogotá Food Bank we extend an invitation to continue promoting global collaborations and joint actions to meet all the challenges set out in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Thank you for supporting our daily effort. Today, we invite you, once again, to walk with us and support our tasks to ensure that food in Colombia becomes a right and not a privilege.
