In Colombia, rural areas are home to thousands of families facing profound challenges rooted in poverty. According to DANE, 41.2% of people in rural areas live in monetary poverty, and 19 out of every 100 people are in extreme poverty. These figures paint a stark picture, particularly for children, as they face limited access to nutritious food, education, and opportunities for a brighter future.
In this context, the Banco de Alimentos de Bogotá strives to be a vital bridge between rural areas and vulnerable communities through its Programa de Recuperación de Excedentes Agrícolas (PREA). Active in 35 municipalities across Colombia, this program not only aims to reduce food waste but also seeks to dignify the efforts of farmers by providing them fair compensation for products that, while not meeting commercial standards, are perfectly suitable for human consumption.
Moreover, through the Tejiendo Comunidad initiative, we deliver food baskets to families in rural areas where these surpluses are collected. This effort not only improves nutrition for local communities but also strengthens the bonds of solidarity between farmers and vulnerable families. For children, these initiatives translate into more consistent access to nutritious food—essential for their physical and mental development.
The impact of these actions goes beyond providing meals. Every time a child in a rural area receives food through the PREA program, they are also gaining the opportunity to grow in a healthier and more hopeful environment. By focusing on rural communities, the Banco de Alimentos de Bogotá reaffirms its commitment to the most overlooked sectors, where hunger strikes hardest.
We invite everyone to join this mission. With your support, we can reach even more municipalities, improving the lives of thousands of children and their families. Colombia is a rural country, and together, we can transform every corner of the countryside into a place where dignity and hope flourish.
