Did you know 1 in 3 children in Northeast Arkansas don't know where their next meal is coming from? The mission of the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas's Backpack Program is to meet the needs of hungry children by providing them with nutritious and easy-to-prepare foods to take home on weekends and school holidays when other resources are not available. In 2024, the Food Bank off Northeast Arkansas sent home more than 1,050 backpacks of food each week of the school year.
Arkansas currently ranks first in the nation for food insecurity, according to the USDA. In Northeast Arkansas, 21% of our neighbors face hunger, including many children. At the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas, we firmly believe that no child should go to bed hungry. That's why we created our Backpack Program-to provide children with nutritious food over the weekends and school breaks, ensuring they have the fuel they need to thrive.
Many children rely on school meals for their primary nutrition, and without them, they face hunger. Through the Backpack Program, the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas discreetly distributes backpacks filled with food to participating schools, ensuring children have meals when school is not in session. By reducing food insecurity, the program supports children's health, academic performance, and overall well-being, helping them focus on learning rather than worrying about their next meal.
The long-term impact of the Backpack Program extends far beyond simply providing meals-it helps break the cycle of food insecurity and fosters a healthier future for children in need. Proper nutrition during childhood is critical for physical and cognitive development, and consistent access to food improves a child's ability to focus, learn, and succeed in school. Over time, this leads to better educational outcomes, higher self-esteem, and improved overall health.
