Dear Donors,
When violence reached Kan Biri community in Zamfara State, Aisha Usman had little time to think about possessions.
She thought about her children.
Aisha gathered her two children, carrying her one-year-seven-month-old daughter, Umma Salma, while holding her son Nasiru by the hand. Together, they joined hundreds of people fleeing their community.
They walked for hours.
According to Aisha's account published by UNICEF in July 2026, the children were tired and the family had little food or water during their journey.
Eventually, they reached Tashar Magani Layin Yan Kaji in Gusau, where other families displaced by insecurity had also sought safety.
But reaching safety did not end Aisha's worries.
Her young daughter developed a fever, and Aisha had no money for treatment because the family had left everything behind. A mobile health team later reached the community and treated her daughter for fever and malaria while also checking her son for malnutrition.
Another displaced mother, Zainabu Hashimu, described the wider problem plainly: families keep moving in search of shelter, while feeding their children has become difficult.
These are the human stories behind displacement.
A family may escape the bullets, but hunger can follow them to wherever they find shelter.
Our Feed Nigerian Families in Crisis Facing Hunger project was created for families facing circumstances like these. As funds become available, we will work directly with affected communities to understand their needs and provide food and relief assistance to families who need help.
We are grateful to our donors, partners, volunteers and everyone sharing this project.
If Aisha's story moves you, please share this project with friends, family and on social media. You can also start an individual fundraiser through GlobalGiving and bring people you know together to support displaced families.
They have already walked far enough carrying the weight of displacement. They should not have to carry hunger with them too.
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
