Feeding 1000 kids in the South of Madagascar

By Sandra Randrianjatovo | Project Leader

Ambovombe, located in the South of Madagascar, is the most affected by famine for a few years already. Since last year, the situation has only worsened. In our strategy, food security is one of our priorities in the areas where we work.

Thanks to the support from GlobalGiving and other partner, Mar y Sol, we have fed all kindergarten and primary school children in 3 schools in Ambovombe: Tsirangoty-Esalo-Ankilifatsy since April 2022 until now through a school canteen project. More than 900 children eat a hot, nutritious meal for four school days every week. The government support also the meals for one day that’s why we fed children for four days a week. A slight increase in the number of students enrolled in these 3 schools was also observed. During the first term of the 2022-2023 school year, the number enrolled was 880 but currently it is 907.

In January, the students planted sweet potatoes because at that time it was raining in Ambovombe which is favorable for cultivation. Currently, the sweet potatoes have grown well and the students are waiting for the harvest in a few months. These sweet potatoes will be used in the school canteen menu.

Apart from the school feeding, we promote also hand washing and provide soap and water. Our goal is to provide support to improve the hygiene, food and nutrition security of children who are most affected on the one hand and on the other hand, increasing the number children receiving primary education, especially the most vulnerable

We understand that the fund we received for this project is small but it has allowed us to continue to lighten the burden on parents and reduce the impact of drought in this region. So far, we have had success in increasing the number of enrolled but these schools are still encountering difficulties on materials and furniture that are insufficient. In the classrooms, almost half of the students sit on the ground due to lack of table-benches.

Thank you, GlobalGiving and donors, without you we could not achieve it however, we are still need your support in order that we can continue what we have started.
