After being in a state of emergency over the past several years due to the spread of COVID-19, activities in our projects in Peru have been gradually returning to normal. With more than 70% of the Peruvian population vaccinated with at least 2 doses against COVID-19, the children are returning to school with many in need of support. We reopened the San Juan Bautista Children's Dining Room to provide healthy nutritious meals for the school population of the Lomas de Amauta settlement in Ate, Peru.
Additionally, research has shown that the prevalence of childhood anemia in Peru is approximately 30%. Childhood anemia is associated with poor intake of iron-rich foods, high prevalence of infectious diseases, a lack of safe water, low birth weight and insufficient breastfeeding. Therefore, a specific objective of our feeding program is to identify children with anemia and take measures to improve their situations. Mothers of these children also participate in trainings on how to improve their nutrition.
In the past three months, 69 school children (31 girls and 38 boys) have participated in the feeding program and received healthy and nutritious school lunch.
