Our soup kitchen supports some of Lima's poorest and most vulnerable residents, 89 school-age children. However, this project has been operating with worn-out utensils and lacks adequate furniture especially as the number of beneficiaries has increased due to COVID-19. Many children are eating on the floors, often with their hands. With your help, we will provide new equipment that will increase the access to our food, as well as provide a space for educational reinforcement classes.
Due to the social distancing measures, the project could not take place in our facilities. It was executed through the delivery of food baskets to low-income families, reaching a total of 75 households. However, during this time, the utensils became very worn out, which required us to throw many of them away. Because of this, many children are currently using improvised utensils or using their hands and other unsanitary options.
With new utensils, we will be able to continue serving the Lima community with dignity while also expanding the access to our project to more recipients. Our program has been shown to be successful throughout the past 10 years; however, with additional funding, we will be able to serve a larger community, which means more children in need will receive nutritious meals.
Through accessing food in our program while also following educational reinforcement classes, our recipients are able to receive a greater education. This is because they will be able to focus solemnly on school instead of worrying about their next meal. With this higher education, they will be able to rise out of poverty. They will additionally help future generations do the same, creating a positive cycle. Overall, this will increase the wellbeing of Lima's residents as well as their future.
