In Argentina, 66.1% of the adult population is overweight, 40.6% has high blood pressure and only 6% consume the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables. Most people do not have enough information to make healthy consumption decisions. To revert this situation, we need concrete actions towards raising awareness and building capacity on the importance of a healthy diet. Our main objective is to empower citizens and civil society to make better choices regarding eating decisions.
In Argentina, 66.1% of the adult population is overweight, 40.6% has high blood pressure and only 6% consume the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables. Argentina has the highest percentage of obesity in children under five in Latin America. The main cause of this situation is the lack of policies that ensure access to quality food and the adoption of healthier habits. It is fundamental to promote policies that guarantee access to information and the adoption of healthier decisions.
Our goal is to empower the population and key actors on the importance of public policies that guarantee adequate healthy eating habits. We will use our research as a communication resource to inform key actors. They will replicate the message, generating a greater impact. A campaign will also be developed to set this issue in the public agenda. Then, training actions will be carried out so different audiences can become aware of the importance of policies that guarantee healthier habits.
Overweight and obesity have serious consequences for public health. People who are overweight and obese are at greater risk of having heart disease, diabetes and cancer. These diseases have a serious impact on sanitary costs. In addition, obesity and overweight can have a very negative impact on emotional well-being. It is urgent for governments to develop policies to guarantee the right to healthy food and facilitate society towards making better eating choices and healthier lifestyles.
