Since 2006, AdvocAid has learned about what works to achieve feminist law reform. With your support, we will use the insights from our hands-on legal services and projects to raise the voices of the women and girls we work with to national and international platforms, creating change for generations of Sierra Leonean girls to come. Your contributions through Global Giving give us the independence allow us to adapt and react to the needs of the women and girls we work with.
AdvocAid's research, published in 2020, found that: 62% of incarcerated women were held in pre-trial detention. 34% of women arrested and detained for survival economic or petty crimes Of women in prison for committing a crime against their partner, 94% reported that the partner beat, bullied or sexually harmed them before they committed the crime.
AdvocAid will continue our core work of pursuing justice for women and girls. We will deliver legal empowerment so women and girls can better know, use and shape the laws that impact them. We will also advocate for gender-responsive Sierra Leonean legal frameworks through research, strategic litigation and advocacy. We will create opportunities for women and girls through education and economic empowerment.
Since 2006 we have supported over 6,000 women through our access to justice and post-prison services. Whilst AdvocAid was proudly able to continue our vital legal, advocacy and welfare services during the Ebola outbreak and the COVID19 pandemic, rebuilding our resilience takes time. Regular monthly contributions will help us build a strong foundation for the next 15 years, as we work towards our vision that women and girls in Sierra Leone have their human rights respected and protected.
