Fighting against the tide of hunger.

Measuring the land for a demonstration garden.

South Sudan continues to suffer with a food crisis.  Over half the population face extreme and deadly hunger.   This is made worse by the many refugees fleeing the war in Sudan as well as internal conflict.   In our region, Fangak County, military conflict has displaced tens of thousands of people just in the last couple months.  And then there’s the international shift—with shelves of food stocks bare due to a lack of funding.  It’s a hunger crisis.

Our program continues to fight against this strong current of hunger and malnutrition.  Just this month we cleared a large plot of land in the village of Paguir to create a community demonstration garden.  A field of maize was planted.  Not only does this have the potential of feeding hundreds of hungry people, but it’s also an opportunity to teach people good farming technique.

Our team has been raising fruit trees.  Over 500 saplings are now ready for distribution to farm families in the region.  Mangos, papayas, lemon trees.  All will be given to over 300 farming families in five villages.

Our agriculture team has also continued the program of distributing seeds.  Recently we distributed seeds to 161 households.  The vegetables will be used to feed their families with excess sold in the markets.

The NGOs that historically have handed out food supplies have halted their work.  Funding for future food distributions are uncertain.  But this project is providing families with a means to grow their own food.  With your continued help we will do more.

In uncertain times it’s donors like you who will make the determination that people in South Sudan, particularly in Fangak County, have the means to help themselves.  It’s truly an amazing project and thanks to you it is feeding thousands.
