Season For Planting. Hope Amidst Reduced Flooding.

We are at work in our compound at Old Fangak, South Sudan.  The daily projects include taking inventory, painting a new door to a new storage unit and, for me, meeting with team leaders to discuss our ongoing projects.  Then I hear the singing.

It’s coming from the main, open area of our compound.  Gathered there are 20+ women.  Their voices strong. The singing is celebratory. I leave the team meeting to investigate, and I’m overcome with the same happiness.  They are singing and dancing to celebrate the distribution of seeds for a new planting season.

The rainy season extended into November but by the end of the month it is hot and dry.  Now it is the season of planting.  All the women gathered today are farmers.  In fact, over half of all the farmers we help are women.

During this planting season we will distribute seeds to over 1,000 farmers.  Some will come to our compound, like today.  Typically, we will travel to the many locations throughout the county for small community gatherings. Given that the region is still flooded, the team travels by boat and small dugout canoe to hand out the seeds.  Okra, Tomato, Sukuma, Onion, Eggplant, Pumpkin and Watermelon.

The farmers you support are successful in part because the seeds we purchase are high quality. Every new planting season gives us hope that the people here are a step closer to ending hunger.  After 4 years of regional flooding, meaning limited space to grow vegetables, the farmers say they can tell that the water is receding.  It gives them hope and it’s not just for food.

We know that on average each farmer earns around $800 annually by selling extra produce in the local markets.  That income is in many cases is the only extra cash a family has.  It is used for clothing, to pay for school tuition, and to purchase additional food.  This alone tells me the agriculture program is an amazing success.   But not everywhere.

Throughout much of South Sudan the picture is not as cheerful.  Over half the country’s population, 6.6 million people, experience high levels of acute food insecurity.  So, while I am so grateful to be here and to see the good coming from our small project, I understand that we have a lot of work to do.  Village by village we will continue to help individual farmers grow food to feed their families and to support their livelihoods. Expanding slowly until one day, I hope, everyone in South Sudan has enough food.

Now that I think about it, is there a better reason to celebrate?  The singing and dancing are confirmation that our program is working.
