Dear friends,
Although it is an international month to celebrate LGBTQ+, in Africa we feel like things are going backwards as in Uganda the government have passed a law for it to be illegal to be gay in Uganda.
This just shows how tough life can be for people in the community across Africa, it is not just Uganda as the maximum penalty is death in Maurtania, Somalia and Nigeria. Same sex relationships are now illegal in Uganda but also in Sudan, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia and Jail time can be up to 14 years in prison.
In 2019 in Kenya the High Court upheld a law criminalising consentual same sex sexual activity saying it was "an effective method to contain the country's HIV epidenmic"
Pride across Africa is not yet possible but our projects are here to support young adults across Africa and to build a voice across Afrca so we can tackle policy.
Thank you for being apart of this movement. together we can help and change communities across Africa
