Dear Friends,
October is a significant month as it marks Pride Month in South Africa, a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. However, it’s important to remember that not all countries in Africa share this sentiment. Many are facing persecution for being a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
In countries like Uganda, Mauritania, Somalia, and Nigeria, laws have been enacted that make it illegal to be gay, with penalties ranging from imprisonment to death. In Sudan, Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia, same-sex relationships are also illegal, with jail time reaching up to 14 years. In 2019, Kenya’s High Court upheld a law criminalising consensual same-sex sexual activity, citing it as an “effective method to contain the country’s HIV epidemic.”
While Pride is not yet possible across all of Africa, our projects aim to support young adults across the continent and build a voice to challenge these policies.
We thank you for being a part of this movement. Your donations can help us continue our work and bring about change in communities across Africa. Together, we can make a difference.
