Seeds for a Future and our local field team of nutrition and home agriculture experts are ready to start a new chapter in the fight against malnutrition in rural Guatemala. Thus far, our Integrated Backyard Farm, or Casa-Granja, concept has brought healthy food production and nutrition gardening to:
Scientific research has shown that our method produces positive results in the fight against malnutrition. The extensive impact described above shows that the Casa-Granja functions well for families and organizations that want to improve food security, nutrition and overall health conditions.
One reason for the Casa-Granja’s great practical success is that underlying concepts are customized to vital factors in each community. The first step is an extensive diagnosis of the needs and interests of the people in the community, as well as such factors as environment, climate, geography, local and family resources, culture and traditions.
In an April test project, the Seeds for a Future team traveled to Chajul, Quiché, where they trained Ixil women and organization leaders. Our team guided the successful installation of a demonstration garden and taught techniques for growing nutrition-packed mushrooms and microgreens. Each local organization also received a library of how-to manuals, recipe books and nutrition information resources developed by Seeds for a Future.
Based on this test, we have developed a 7-month Extension Service program for expanding the proven Casa-Granja concept to 3 new communities in Guatemala, to help families in each community learn to secure access to better and healthier food through their own efforts.
Help us make this Extension Service a success! YOUR SUPPORT will bring prosperity to the poorest villages in Guatemala by allowing us to coach a local field team to bring nutritious plants and animal protein to the tables of rural families. YOU ARE THE KEY to our effectiveness and growth! With your gift hundreds of families will have a better and healthier future!
