As we step into International Women's Month, we want to share a few updates celebrating our progress and the blossoming new dynamics that highlight amazing women within our growing Seeds program.
Demonstration Garden Growth
Late last year, the Seeds for a Future team established our new demonstration garden seed by seed. After months of dedicated team effort, the fruits of their labor are now being harvested. We are delighted to share the bountiful produce and the enriching experience with our community. This initiative has been made possible through the support of our generous supporters, enabling the Seeds team to not only cultivate a thriving garden but also to host educational community events. Thanks to this contribution, we can engage without community through in-person, hands-on workshops, fostering a deeper connection and understanding of sustainable practices.
Expanding our Team and Presence
We are excited to share that our program is expanding its reach into the Canilla Quiché region of Guatemala, a community facing significant challenges related to food scarcity and malnutrition. According to data from USAID, up to 70% of the population in this region experiences food insecurity. To address this issue, our team is fortunate to welcome Doña Jenny, a native of Conailla Quiché, as our newest Field Team member. Pictured below with her children, she shares that "what prompted my family and I to join Seeds for a Future was the deep desire to serve the community and leave a legacy for my generation." Doña Jenny's strong connection to the community adds a meaningful dimension to our efforts, and we look forward to contributing positively to the well-being of families in the region through the expansion of our program.
Women Empowering Women
In Santo Tomas, a peer-led cohort of female members of our program has come together to collaborate on maximizing the productivity of their home gardens. Pamela, pictured below, is their dedicated cohort leader and has been a program member for nearly a year. She effectively coordinates the efforts of four other women, uniting them in a shared commitment to enhance their gardening skills and explore best practices for maximizing their harvest. By hosting regular meetings and collaborative initiatives, her leadership not only empowers these women in their journeys but also strengthens the bonds as they strive towards improving their expertise. Through their collective efforts, the cohort shared they have each seen improvement in their overall family well-being and the cost savings in reduced roundtrip travel and spending at the local market.
