Carmelina's Garden: Ripples of Community Transform

Dear Cherished Supporters,

As the first quarter of 2025 draws to a close, I am filled with immense gratitude and hope as I share the remarkable journey of our program in rural Guatemala. What began as a modest initiative has blossomed into a transformative movement, touching the lives of families in ways we could only dream of just months ago.

Blossoming Impact

Our small but mighty team has grown from 12 to 18 dedicated field team members, a testament to our mission's increasing demand and potential. This expansion has allowed us to reach deeper into communities that have long been overlooked, with the potential to bring hope and nutrition to over 250 families across four new communities.

One story captures the essence of our work better than any statistic. In the town of Santa Maria la Visitacion in the Solola department (state), we learned the story of Carmelina, a woman who embodies the true spirit of community transformation. Not content to receive support, Carmelina has become a beacon of hope for her family and community as a recent team member, servicing over 100 families.

On a personal note and through our First 1,000 Days initiative,  she is now supporting her pregnant daughter's nutrition, carefully cultivating a garden of fresh herbs and introducing nutrient-rich meals like chicken livers. Her journey illustrates the ripple effect of our program – one family's health becomes a catalyst for broader community change.

Growing Partnerships

Our recent partnership with The M Story has been pivotal in our journey. Together, we are bridging gaps and creating sustainable pathways to nutrition and empowerment. In the Suchitepequez department, we work closely to train community members, develop strategic implementation plans, and extend our nutrition education to 150 families. This collaboration represents more than a partnership – a shared vision of community-led transformation.

Cultivating Resources for Empowerment

Innovation continues to be at the heart of our approach. We've established four "piloneras" – seed nurseries go beyond simple growing spaces. These nurseries represent skill-building, resource optimization, and a commitment to sustainable agriculture. Our team members cultivate plants as they cultivate their knowledge, ownership, and hope.

We remain acutely aware of the challenges ahead as we look to the future. We are actively seeking a location for our fifth seed nursery and continue to seek support that will allow us to meet the growing needs of the remarkable communities we collectively serve. Each donation is more than a financial contribution – it is a seed of hope, carefully planted and nurtured.

To our donors, supporters, and community partners:  Your belief transforms lives. Your generosity allows us to continue this critical work, supporting families in their journey to better nutrition, stronger communities, and brighter futures.

With deepest gratitude,

Suzanne De Berge and the Seeds for a Future Team

P.S. We continue to be inspired by the resilience, creativity, and hope of the families we serve. Your support makes this journey possible.
