Summary

Adequate emergency response is vital to any community. Every donation helps better equip First Responders, Firefighters and Fire Departments in Nicaragua with the rescue equipment, firefighting gear and emergency vehicles needed for saving lives and property. Thanks to people who care, 28 ambulances and 38 fire trucks have been sent to Nicaragua along with donated equipment and materials. These include: turnout coats and pants, boots, helmets, breathing apparatus, gloves, hoses and nozzles.

Challenge

Firefighters and responders to accidents and disasters put their lives on the line everyday. Not having the proper equipment for a rescue or fire puts everyone in danger when lives are at stake. By working together, we can help improve existing as well as new fire stations to have the tools needed to do their duties safely and effectively.

Solution

The acquisition of ambulances, fire trucks and equipment is a successful beginning in helping with the needs of the first responders and firefighters of Nicaragua. Nicaragua is a large country and there is room for people to help better equip some of the under-equipped areas in need. As technology changes in the U.S. we are fortunate to be able to move up to more advanced equipment while older equipment still is in good condition and has a remaining useful life, and reasonable resale values.

Long-Term Impact

One of the first projects following the formation of the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partnership in 1965 was securing and sending a fire truck to Nicaragua. Since that time 28 ambulances and 38 fire trucks have followed along with much needed turn out gear and other life saving equipment. The role of women in the fire service is changing for the better as well, "...we only had 7 operational women and today we have 551 operational female firefighters..."
