This project aims to create educational materials in Bulgarian for refugee and migrant children. Thus, they will learn the language faster, do better at school and their integration will be supported. At the same time, these materials will help many teachers who have no experience in teaching Bulgarian as a foreign language and teaching refugee children whose number among their students is increasing.
According to UNHCR data, 56,322 Ukrainian children have received temporary protection in Bulgaria in the last two years. In addition, 10,861 children from other countries sought international protection. Receiving so many children was a major challenge for the education system and only 4,895 enrolled in school. The lack of learning materials for Bulgarian as a foreign language, as well as the lack of experience of Bulgarian teachers in teaching refugee children, are among the main difficulties.
Since materials play a central role in language teaching, Reachout's team has created a textbook with 10 introductory lessons and a picture dictionary, which are already being used by refugee and migrant children from different countries. To meet the huge need for learning materials, this project will create a pool of materials that can make teachers' work easier, and help refugee and migrant students reach higher level of understanding in learning.
The project will help thousands of children to increase their Bulgarian proficiency level so that they can communicate freely and integrate fully. The learning materials that we will create can be used in schools, in specially organized language courses for refugee and migrant children or for independent language learning.
