700,000 people are affected due to the destruction of the Kakhovka dam. They require essentials: clean drinking water, food, clothes and hygiene basics. 16,000 people are in the critical flood zone and need evacuation. The Ukrainian Red Cross is working both at the site and throughout Ukraine to help the affected population and alleviate their suffering.
Southern Ukraine is on the verge of an environmental and humanitarian disaster. On June 6, at 3 a.m., one of the largest water reservoirs in southern Ukraine, the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam, was destroyed. According to Ukrhydroenergo experts, the dam is beyond repair. The Kakhovka Reservoir, which was kept by the dam, stretched for 240 kilometers along the river and supplied water, including drinking, to large cities with thousands of residents and dozens of villages.
We continue to evacuate people from the flooded territories and require protective wetsuits, life jackets and torches, radios with repeaters, and boats with a large carrying capacity. We provide vital things, first of all: bottled drinking water, food kits, clothes and shoes, bedding, pillows and blankets, hygiene kits, disinfectants, power generators, mobile water filtration equipment and transport for water delivery to all towns and villages that relied on the Kakhovka reservoir.
The flood water will start to subside in 5-6 days. Today, we are evacuating, providing psychological support and first aid, and doing everything we can to reduce the suffering of those who need it most. Your help today means a chance for survival for hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians. Your support today means the salvation of the Ukrainian nation. Thanks to your donations, the Ukrainian Red Cross will help millions to alleviate their suffering and survive the crisis.
