Summary

This project will spearhead mass Disaster Risk Reduction workshops in Sri Lanka with the goal of achieving zero deaths. With local partners in Sri Lanka including A-PAD Sri Lanka, Capital Maharajah, and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), we seek to raise awareness and build the capacity of Sri Lankans to reduce loss from devastating floods.

Challenge

Each year, torrential rains and monsoons cause severe flash floods and landslides in Sri Lanka. In 2016 and 2017, more than five hundred people lost their lives and Sri Lanka suffered huge economic losses of which 90% were to the private sector. These massive losses can be mitigated through active disaster risk reduction programs, however, not enough is being done.

Solution

In 2018, in anticipation of these disaster, A-PAD Sri Lanka, in partnership with the media, undertook a challenge to reduce deaths and losses by carrying out preparedness campaigns in vulnerable districts. Those programs made a substantial positive impact as the death toll in 2018 was reduced to 37. Our local partners conduct workshops in 4 vulnerable districts and broadcast the sessions through TV and radio to ensure maximum reach. We will provide handouts, pocket diaries, and guidelines.

Long-Term Impact

Continually educating the general public on Disaster Risk Reduction is the best way to ensure minimal loss of life during disasters. People need to understand and practice risk mitigation efforts and take responsibility for their family's safety. These workshops will raise awareness and bring greater understanding on what to do in the event of a disaster.
