Summary

More than 500mm of heavy rain fell in Gurye-gun, for 3 days from 7 to 9 August. People are suffering from immense damage as a river flooded and a dike collapsed. The biggest problem is that every household is washed away from their house or got messy with mud. We intend to provide daily necessities (meals, underwear, T-shirt and shorts), cleaning equipment (shovel, boots, clean water), and small electric appliances for the victims, so that they clean their house at least.

Challenge

Nearly one thousand of victims are staying at victim's shelter. Most of these people could just get out of their houses without anything as the water was at nearly chest level within 10 minutes. They have to clean or buy their household appliances, as these were washed away or got messy with mud. There are shower rooms in victim's shelter, but only the cold water is provided, which is the big problem considering the victims' age - mostly the aged people, as the affected area is the rural place.

Solution

We are currently providing bath service, as the victims cannot take a shower as the water supplying was stopped, or only the cold water is provided. We are intending to provide essential items such as shovel, rubber boots, some clothes and proper meals, as they have no choice but to keep cleaning until they get back their house again. We are also planning to make and provide 'the emergency kit' as well, which contains some side dishes, different kinds of seasoning, tissues, porridge, etc.

Long-Term Impact

1182 houses, 11 public facilities and 421 hectares of farmland were flooded, and 3,820 livestock were damaged, as of 9 August. Through providing the cleaning equipment and other essential items, they can restore their house more quickly and easily. The Gurye people could also restore their minds as they take a bath with hot and clean water, so that they could get the power to rebound from this natural disaster.
