This project will provide emergency relief and capacity-building for communities in Peru affected by recent flooding. The crisis has received little news coverage, and many communities remain in dire need of assistance.
During the first months of 2017, Peru has been pummeled by post El Nino rains, causing mass flooding and disastrous landslides. Over 937,000 people are affected, and up to 700,000 are now homeless. The needs include both emergency items such as food, water, and hygiene kits, as well as more long-term solutions to deal with the trauma and infrastructure damage.
This project will cover the activities of IsraAID's team on the ground in Peru as they provide both short-term aid to communities in dire need. The team also includes a psychosocial trauma specialist, and a water engineer to tackle the mid and long-term effects on communities
Trauma from mass events such as this can be extremely paralyzing for local communities, particularly vulnerable groups such as children who are not in school for extensive period due to the destruction. In addition, many water sources have been contaminated, leading to fears of disease outbreaks with potential catastrophic long-term effects. IsraAID's professional team will focus on providing safe water and the capacity-building of local professionals to build resilience and tackle trauma.
