UNICEF has estimated that roughly 1 in 10 girls in Africa miss school because of their periods each year. Menstruation is a normal phenomenon and hence should not be a barrier to education Many girls, especially in underprivileged communities cannot afford the conventional disposable pads despite its many shortcomings. The Reusable Sanitary Pad is sustainable, hygienic, biodegradable and eco friendly. This is the gap this project aims to fill.
UNICEF has estimated that roughly 1 in 10 girls in Africa miss school because of their periods each year. The value of education especially for the girl child cannot be overemphasized. Menstruation is a normal phenomenon and hence should not be a barrier to education. Often, the cost of sanitary products for girls is simply too high, forcing them to skip school to tend to their bleeding. On the other hand, they resort to very unhygienic measures such as use of toilet paper, rags, grasses etc
The Reusable eco-friendly sanitary pad is sustainable as it can be used all year long and for more years. It is more economic and eco-friendly. It is made from cotton materials, body friendly and devoid of bleached materials unlike the conventional pad. Arming a girl with the reusable pad would go a long way to improve the self esteem of the girl, emphasize the importance of education, reduce risk of cancer, TSS & other related conditions and greatly protect our earth from plastic pollution.
This option will also greatly improve the economy of the State. How? More girls finishing school, boast the number of employable females. Employment opportunity for young women who work at the production factory. Environmental impact caused by sanitary waste is one of the most significant topics today. A plastic, industrially manufactured, disposable sanitary pad requires about 500-800 years to decompose. Thousands of tons of disposable sanitary waste is generated every month all over the world.
