Thousands of pregnant women in rural Nigeria lack access to skilled birth attendants due to poor roads and limited health facilities. Many die from preventable complications during childbirth. This project will deploy trained midwives by motorbike and bicycle to reach 3,500 rural women with prenatal care, safe deliveries, and emergency referrals. Timely intervention will reduce maternal and infant deaths, giving women and newborns a chance to survive and thrive.
Nigeria has one of the world's highest maternal mortality rates, with rural women most at risk. Poor roads and long distances keep many from reaching hospitals. Without skilled care, complications such as bleeding, infections, and obstructed labor often end in death. Families lose mothers and newborns simply because no help is nearby. Limited midwives and lack of transport worsen the crisis, leaving thousands of rural women with little or no care.
The project will deploy midwives to remote villages using motorbikes and bicycles, bringing maternal care directly to women who cannot reach hospitals. Services will include antenatal check-ups, safe deliveries, and newborn care. Emergency evacuation flights will be arranged for high-risk cases. Delivery kits, medicines, and skilled supervision will reduce deaths during childbirth. By reaching 3,500 women, the project brings safe, timely care closer to those who need it most.
Saving mothers means stronger families and healthier communities. Women who survive childbirth are able to care for their children and contribute to family stability. Skilled deliveries also reduce newborn deaths, giving babies a healthy start in life. Trained midwives who work in rural areas build trust and lasting care networks. With time, this project will strengthen maternal health systems in underserved regions and reduce preventable maternal deaths.
