Follow-up of infants born to HIV positive mothers is crucial for the success of the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission program. Provision and uptake of postnatal services have weak links in the continuum of care for HIV+ women and their babies. Most HIV+ women and their new-born are still at HIV-AIDS risk This project will support 200 infants born from HIV positive mothers in Chipulukusu by ensuring that they get tested and those who are tested HIV positive are put on early treatment.
According to Ndola District Health Office in 2018, Mapalo Clinic had 1249 clients on antenatal Care out of which 1168 are on antiretroviral treatment and 238 HIV exposed babies born from HIV positive mothers are lost to follow-up. This project will conduct follow-up intervention ( such as infant tracking and referrals) of 200 infants born to HIV positive mothers in order to increase early HIV infant diagnosis and early antiretroviral treatment for infants in Chipulukusu.
Mapalo Support Group will Inform the key stakeholders e.g. Ndola District Health Office, local clinics management and others stakeholders about the project, identify and train 20 mentor mothers in Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV, conduct home visits for infant follow-up, conduct monthly sessions at clinics for HIV+ mothers when they come for under 5 clinic
The project will ensure that 200 Infants get early HIV diagnosis and this will ultimately lead to increased availability, accessibility and utilization of antenatal care and other health care services. The project will as well Increased community direct participation in Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission, sexual and reproductive health including human rights-services.
