In 2026, nearly half of Afghanistan's population requires humanitarian assistance to survive. Families are struggling to survive amidst high unemployment and underemployment rates, inflation on necessities, and women being banned from working in most sectors. Prolonged food insecurity has resulted in severe malnutrition for women and children. This project identifies vulnerable families, like women-lead households, in northern Afghanistan and provides these families with staple food supplies.
In 2026, nearly half of Afghanistan's population will require humanitarian assistance to survive according to the UN. Families are struggling to survive amidst high unemployment and underemployment rates, inflation on necessities, and women being banned from working in most sectors. Due to prolonged food insecurity, malnutrition rates that qualify as severe have tripled since 2024 . Women-lead households are particularly struggling to meet their families' needs as options for employment are few.
AAFF partners with Afghan communities to identify the most vulnerable Afghan families suffering from food insecurity. We meet with each family to understand their needs. Approved families receive staple food supplies that typically supports a family of 7. The supplies vary per distribution but usually include flour, oil, rice, and beans. Additionally, we support the local economy by purchasing supplies from local merchants, and employing Afghans to sort, transport, and distribute aid.
Supporting Afghan families with food aid prevents starvation, malnutrition, and promotes health in other aspects of life. Providing jobs and purchasing locally helps small businesses survive in a struggling economy. The economic struggles impacts many aspects of life including a rise in child marriage as families are forced to sell their daughters to provide for their families. Providing families with food aid gives hope and the opportunity to make choices for the wellbeing of their families.
