The economic situation in Afghanistan continues to cause hardship for many Afghan families. Many people are struggling to find work and therefore are unable to meet the basic needs of their families.
The average size of an Afghan family is 6. However, frequently Afghan families have more than four children (and sometimes more than one wife) and multigenerations usually live together. One income in the best of times is often challenging to provide for the family.
Prices continue to soar in Afghanistan making even staple food supplies challenging to purchase. The majority of the population continue to struggle to meet their basic needs for food.
In the first quarter of 2023, AAFF was able to respond to this need by providing 120 families a month's worth of staple food supplies. In each of these families, the head of household was in a drug rehab program for several months.
Some of the men's addictions occurred as a result of not being able to find work and they lost hope over not being able to provide for their families. We heard from teenage boys, mothers, and grandparents who are now responsible to provide for the needs of their families. At best they are able to find minimal work such as washing clothes or occassional day labor jobs.
The food aid brought both relief and hope for these families. One mother told us that she wouldn't have to worry that month and any money she made that month could provide for her family for the following month.
Currently, we are surveying families for the next round of food distribution so in May, another 120 families will receive a month's worth of staple food supplies. Thank you for your partnership with us. Your support is helping to lighten the burden of Afghan families trying to survive in these difficult times.
