According to the UN, as of April 2023, "34 million people - 90%of the population [of Afghanistan] - live below the poverty line. Two in three Afghans do not know when they will get their next meal." Additionally, 15 million Afghans are not consuming enough food and almost half of children under 5 years old are facing malnutrition.
The need for food aid in Afghanistan continues to be great yet in this time the global community is decreasing their support. The UN is the main contributor of aid in Afghanistan. In July the UN was only able to assist 5 million Afghans with food aid and are reporting that aid may stop completely in October if funding doesn't increase.
AAFF has continued the essential work of distributing food aid in this critical time. In May, AAFF supported 120 Afghan families, 872 Afghans in Northern Afghanistan with 100 kilos of food supplies. This provided a family of 6-8 a month worth of flour, rice, beans, oil, lentils, sugar, salt, tomato paste, matches, and soap.
We work hard to identify those who are in the most need in Northern Afghanistan and who have not received assistance from other organizations. In this round of distribution, we provided aid to widows, beggars, and people with disabilities.
Our staff surveyed each family to determine their need. Once the family has been approved, our staff returned to their home to hand deliver the supplies. This enables our staff to build a relationship with our constituents and it ensures that the families are able to receive the food. While many distributions require the constituents to travel to the distribution site, we recognize that often those in the most need are not able to make the journey or can't afford to transport the food back to their home.
Many of the people we spoke with are doing all they can to find work, but the reality of the economic situation is that there is not much work available. In fact, one widow we delivered to was out looking for work to support her 4 children when we arrived at her home to deliver her food. She rushed home to greet our staff. Shortly after our staff left her home, she called them in tears thanking them again for the encouragement and support in this difficult time.
Currently, we are preparing for our next round of food aid to help 200 families in Northern Afghanistan. Thank you for your partnership with AAFF to provide this life-saving food aid to Afghan families during this critical time. Your donation is saving lives and giving families hope.
