Update on Aid for Afghan Families

By Missy Simmons | Director of Organizational Development

Life in Afghanistan continues to be very difficult. Two-thirds of the population is in need of humanitarian assistance while aid funding is rapidly diminishing. At the end of 2023 the World Food Program reported that malnutrition rates were at a record high with half the population suffering from severe hunger.

Unfortunately, AAFF has seen a drop in funding for our food aid project and we have not been able to support families with 100 kilos of food aid in the last two months. However, AAFF is committed to continuing to support Afghan families in this challenging time. AAFF has adjusted our aid program to provide some aid with the funds that we have.

In January, we hired 21 women to make large, heavy quilts weighing 9 kilos. We distributed the blankets along with 50 kilos of flour to 60 families.

This project provided an income for 21 women for a couple weeks and provided families with enough flour to make their own bread, called naan, for several weeks. Families that are struggling amidst the economic crisis often only eat naan and tea. Additionally, the blankets are essential during the harsh winter months when many households are unable to heat their homes.

Your support has made it possible to support over 400 Afghans in this challenging time. Thank you for your partnership with us. We are working hard to continue this project to employ Afghan women and support families who do not have enough resources to meet their basic needs.
