Summary

We aim to provide daily food and fruit for all the children in the schools where we work in Latin America. For the vast majority this is their only substantial meal of the day. By providing actual food and investing in school vegetable gardens it is hoped that not only our schools will be covered though we can expand into dozens more schools in the coming years.

Challenge

We work in extremely poor schools in rural areas that are severely underfunded. Whilst governments over the years have started to supply basic ingredients they tend not to be enough. A hungry child's concentration levels are not sufficient for learning and these meals can be the children's only meal of the day. What is lacking is a sustainable food source that the schools can rely on.

Solution

Whilst providing daily fruit when we can, holding regular celebrations with a full meal and building kitchens with stoves and providing gas for meals to be cooked, we still have a lot more we want to do. By putting in large-scale school vegetable gardens the children can receive their daily vegetables on top of the basic ingredients provided by the government (and more for when these ingredients run out or don't even arrive). Extra harvests can be sold to buy other ingredients for variety.

Long-Term Impact

Once a vegetable garden is put in and maintained it can produce vegetables for years and years to come. A strategic sewing timetable allows for steady and consistent harvests for daily consumption in the schools with extra produce sold or bartered for products that can't be grown. A child with a full stomach will learn so much more in the classroom than a hungry child struggling to stay awake.
