School veggie gardens to supplement diets

Hi there

Over the last year we have started to implement new plans to boost our already ample food and fruit programmes in the schools. As you know, all students receive a hot meal and a piece of fruit daily to combat the effects of malnutrition and full their tummies so they can concentrate on learning.

We are well aware however, that this, in most cases, is the only place they receive food so we are trying to provide more and more nutrition to help their little bodies grow.

As more generous donors support this project on Global Giving, we have been able to slowly implement our vegetable plans. In the communities that need it, we have started allotments, the community providing the land and us the seeds. The community manages the land and then the produced vegetables are split between the school meals, the families and sold for income. Thus, providing nutrition for the children in the schools and the families back home plus an income for the community.

As we receive more donations, more vegetable patches can be started, our most recent patch was started at Lacacunga after Zoe and Als donated the money for it, now, 21 Mums are in charge of the land and we will soon be adding new vegetables to the school meals!

Please keep supporting all of our food programmes, helping the children and the community to grow.
