Climate Change and Food Security: A Growing Concern for Colombian Families
The effects of climate change on food security in Latin America and the Caribbean are becoming more serious. According to the Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2024, published by the UN, 74% of the countries in the region are highly exposed to extreme weather events like droughts, floods, and storms. These events disrupt agriculture, raise food prices, and threaten progress in the fight against hunger.
The report highlights that 14 countries (52%) face a high risk of food insecurity. Climate change makes existing inequalities worse, making it harder for people to access healthy food and worsening poverty. Between 2019 and 2023, undernourishment in the region increased by 1.5 percentage points, especially affecting the most vulnerable communities.
The UN emphasizes the importance of strengthening food systems to make them more resilient and sustainable. This is key to fighting hunger and malnutrition.
At Banco de Alimentos de Bogotá, we are committed to being part of the solution. By rescuing surplus food, distributing nutritious products, and supporting vulnerable communities, we help reduce food waste and improve access to food. Our work also strengthens communities' ability to face economic and environmental challenges.
But we can’t do it alone. It’s only with your support that we can continue fighting hunger and ensuring that more people have access to nutritious food. Together, we can build a more just and healthier future for all.
