For millions of children in Nigeria, losing a parent or growing up in severe poverty can mean going without the things every child deserves: food, decent clothing and a chance to attend school. UNICEF reports that 10.2 million Nigerian children are out of school, while around 11 million children under five experience severe food poverty. Behind these numbers are children going to bed hungry, wearing worn-out clothes and watching other children attend school because they cannot afford to.
For an orphaned child, poverty can shape every part of the day. Some wake up unsure of where their next meal will come from, attend school in torn clothes, or stop attending altogether because no one can pay for fees, uniforms, or books. Children who have lost one or both parents may depend on relatives who are already struggling to feed their own families. Without these basic needs, many children are left hungry, excluded from school and without the support needed to build a better future.
This project will provide orphaned children with nutritious food, decent clothing and support to enroll in and remain in school. Children will receive meals and food supplies, new clothes, school uniforms, books, bags and learning materials. School fees and other education-related costs will also be covered for children who cannot afford to attend or are at risk of dropping out, giving them the opportunity to learn, grow and build a self-reliance and bright future.
Regular access to food, clothing and education can give orphaned children a more stable path through childhood. Staying in school can improve literacy, knowledge and future employment opportunities, while adequate food supports healthy growth and learning. With school fees and basic needs covered, children are less likely to drop out because of poverty and have a better chance of completing their education, becoming self-reliant adults and breaking the cycle of poverty.
