Every day, a bus collects the vulnerable children living on the streets or at the Sealdah railway station in Kolkata, India to a school run by our partners, streetchildren.dk. Here they receive food, education, healthcare and shelter. At the school, they learn English, Hindi, Bengali, General Knowledge, Science and develop their cognitive skills and knowledge. They are also provided with washing facilities and clothes. In this way, the children are nurtured to lead a healthy and safe childhood.
These street children drift aimlessly searching for food, shelter and safety. Being vulnerable to exploitation, child labour and human trafficking, they desperately need a chance to lead a better life. Without any formal records, the children are refused access to public schools and all too often left to their own devices. In the absence of the the nurturing support, love and care from their parents, the children drift into further abject poverty and suffer from mental and physical harm.
Through the Sealdah Station School, the children's welfare is first and foremost safeguarded. They are fed, nurtured, cared for and provided with education in basic literacy and numeracy as well as regular healthcare. The children's parents are also informed, supported and encouraged to allow the children to receive the benefits of attending the school. The school bus makes sure that the children can get to the school and back home to their parents safely and on a timely basis.
The qualified teachers and welfare workers help these children to feel safe, secure and welcome. By educating them, developing their mental and physical capabilities and introducing them to lifestyle social skills, the children are helped to progress to higher education. The longer-term impact of the school will be to lead them to a healthy, productive and better educated lives well away from the hazards of the street life they have been or otherwise would be exposed to.
